01 / OBSERVE BEFORE YOU ADJUST

What an uneven gap around a closed sliding door can tell you

Learn to document an uneven patio-door gap without confusing alignment with failed seals, and ask for the checks that matter before adjusting hardware.

THE USEFUL STARTING POINT

An uneven-looking gap is a reason to document the panel-to-frame relationship, not proof that the building has moved or the seal has failed. Photograph the whole edge and explain any operating symptom. A technician should distinguish the visible reveal, seal contact, frame alignment, and lock relationship.

First identify which gap you mean

A patio-door opening contains several edges that can look like gaps: the moving panel beside the closing jamb, the meeting area between panels, trim around the frame, and the relationship between a panel and its surrounding channels. Tell the service provider which edge concerns you. A close-up with no context can make these different areas look surprisingly similar.

The word reveal describes a visible relationship between adjacent edges. An uneven reveal may be relevant to alignment, but it is not the same as a measured air leak or confirmed water-entry path. Keep those observations separate. If you also notice a draft, difficult lock, or scraping, record each symptom independently.

Photograph the relationship from a consistent position

With the door stationary, take an indoor photograph showing the entire affected edge and another of the complete opening. Hold the camera as square to the frame as practical. An angled photograph can exaggerate apparent taper, so do not infer exact dimensions from it. Avoid inserting objects into the gap or pressing on the glass.

If there is a visible product label, photograph it separately. The manufacturer and model help determine which panel relationships are intended and which measurements are appropriate. A neighboring door can provide context, but it is not a specification: two similar-looking openings may have different hardware, installation details, or configurations.

Separate four questions

Question Evidence that helps
Does the visible gap taper? A full-height photograph taken from a consistent viewpoint
Does the panel operate differently? Description of drag, catching, or unusual release
Does the lock behave differently? Whether it engages in normal use without force
Is there a weather-related symptom? Location and circumstances of observed air or water, recorded separately

An uneven photograph alone cannot answer all four questions. The point of documenting them separately is to avoid selecting a repair based on appearance while missing an operating problem, or replacing a seal when the relevant issue has not been established.

What manufacturer alignment guidance actually establishes

Andersen’s gliding-door instructions use an even panel-to-side-jamb gap as an alignment reference for the applicable doors. The practical lesson is limited: compare the relevant edges using the correct product guidance. It does not make every visible gap a roller fault or establish a universal acceptable measurement.

The service provider may need to distinguish panel position from the frame’s installed geometry. Ask what was measured, where the comparison was made, and how it relates to the proposed work. A claim that “the house has settled” deserves supporting observations rather than being inferred from one tapered line.

Avoid making the lock compensate for an unexplained gap

A lock that becomes difficult at the same time as the gap changes should be included in the assessment. Do not move the receiver simply to make it catch, or pull the panel into place with the latch. The final relationship between panel, frame, and lock should be explained together.

Likewise, adding or removing weatherstrip to make the visible line look more even is not a sound diagnosis. The intended seal profile and contact depend on the product. A seal can be visibly present without establishing proper compression, and a visible line does not by itself prove that the seal is defective.

Establish a useful before-and-after record

Before work begins, ask what symptom the proposed repair is intended to correct. If the concern is only visual, say so. If the main difficulty is locking or movement, make that the primary acceptance question. This keeps the service scope tied to the problem you actually need resolved.

After service, compare the same edge from the same viewing position and observe normal travel and locking. Ask whether any remaining difference is expected for the identified product or requires further assessment. Request the explanation in the work record, especially if the home is managed remotely.

Keep the original photographs. If the relationship changes again, a dated comparison is more informative than trying to remember whether the gap was always wider at one end. That record supports investigation without turning an appearance change into an unsupported structural conclusion.

An alignment discussion benefits from understanding what roller adjustment can and cannot address. If closing effort differs from opening effort, also record the behavior described in harder-to-close sliding doors rather than relying on gap appearance alone.
